Eye of the Eagle! | Isaiah 40:29-31, Nehemiah 8:10, Psalm 103:1-5, Romans 12:2, Exodus 19:1-4

Are you feeling weary and powerless today? Are you feeling weak? God promises in his Word to give power to us who feel weak, and strength to us who feel powerless. That’s beautiful. Today’s episode is a picture of how the Lord God so deeply and tenderly loves his children. He carried the Israelites through the Red Sea on wings like eagles. As you and I lean into God in this life, we’re going to be stronger. We’re going to see farther. We’re going to fly higher because we’re flying in His strength. We are trusting him. We’re getting stronger day by day. Let’s kick it off in Isaiah chapter 40. Here we go.

Nehemiah 8:10:

And Nehemiah continued, “Go and celebrate with a feast of rich foods and sweet drinks, and share gifts of food with people who have nothing prepared. This is a sacred day before our Lord. Don’t be dejected and sad, for the joy of the Lord is your strength!

You know that song from Rocky, Eye of the Tiger? I kind of feel like it should have been eye of the eagle. Hi, welcome to the Bible for Busy People. We’re going to do some more bird watching today in the Bible. But first, how about a little Eagle 101? Eagles come up in God’s word an awful lot. So, what do you say? You and I study some of their attributes today? Bald eagles can see four to seven times farther than an average human. They can spot prey even when it’s well camouflaged from almost a mile away. I was really fascinated by this. While we humans see just three basic colors, eagles see five colors. Isn’t that cool? See, this is what I mean. Rocky Balboa. It should have been Eye of the Eagle. All right. A bald eagle has around 10 times more gripping power in its large talons than you and I have in our human hands. And a bald eagle’s powerful wings allow it to fly higher up in the sky than most other birds. So, with those notes fresh in our minds, will you join me in Isaiah chapter 40 beginning in verse 29?

He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. Even youths will become weak and tired, and young men will fall in exhaustion. But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.

Are you feeling weary and powerless today? Are you feeling weak? God promises in his word to give power to us who feel weak, and strength to us who feel powerless. That’s beautiful. Do you notice that He says the promises that will soar on wings like eagles, not other birds? Remember what you and I just studied? Eagles fly higher up in the sky than most other birds. He wants us to soar, and that’s a beautiful picture to me. Remember he says, it’s those of us who trust in Him who find new strength. When we lean in, that’s where you and I get stronger. I’m thinking about my friend Sam right now, who just found out that she has cancer and I’m watching her lean into the Lord. She’s trusting him completely with this news. As a matter of fact, she’s joyful. In Nehemiah we’re promised, I think it’s Nehemiah 8:10, I’m going to put this in the notes, so don’t worry that the joy of the Lord is our strength. I asked Sam, I said, what’s one word I can pray for you? And she said, joy. So, every day I’m like, Lord, give her joy unspeakable, indescribable, joy. Joy that comes straight from you. When you and I lean into Jesus, when we trust him with the things that scare us and confuse us and confound us, we find strength and joy. Those things go hand in hand, and suddenly we find ourselves soaring above our circumstances because of the Lord. Okay, I want to move on now to Psalm 103. It’s our next bird watching expedition today, and we’re going to begin in verse one. And as we’re reading this together, I want you to hear the affirmations of King David, who’s writing these words. He may be preaching to himself. I don’t know what was going on in his life the day he wrote this, but he is definitely speaking life to himself and to us as well. So, here we go.

Let all that I am praise the Lord with my whole heart. I will praise his holy name. Let all that I am, praise the Lord. May I never forget the good things he does for me. He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases. He redeems me from death and crowns me with love and tender mercies. He fills my life with good things.

Wait for it.

My youth is renewed like the Eagles.

Man, isn’t that incredible? David is reminding himself that every day God will clean his heart, will give him strength, will give him joy. He can be renewed. We are renewed every single time we open God’s word together. Think of what Paul says in his letter to the Romans, chapter 12 verse two.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you’ll be able to test and approve what God’s will is. His good, pleasing and perfect will.

Every day God is renewing us. He’s renewing our hearts and our spirits as we lean into him for strength and for joy. He wants to renew our youth like the Eagles daily. He’s filling our life with good things. Oh, isn’t it good to be in God’s word? Alright, I want to share one more passage with you today. One more bird watching expedition. Would you join me now in Exodus chapter 19, beginning in verse one.

Exactly two months after the Israelites left Egypt…

Slavery.

…they arrived in the wilderness of Sinai. After breaking camp at Rephidim, they came to the wilderness of Sinai and set up camp there at the base of Mount Sinai. Then Moses the mountain to appear before God. The Lord called to him from the mountain and said, give these instructions to the family of Jacob. Announce it to the descendants of Israel. You have seen what I did to the Egyptians. You know how I carried you on eagle’s wings and brought you to myself?

This is a picture of how the Lord God so deeply and tenderly loves his children. He carried the Israelites through the Red Sea on wings like eagles. As you and I lean into God in this life, we’re going to be stronger. We’re going to see farther. We’re going to fly higher because we’re flying in His strength. We are trusting him. We’re getting stronger day by day. All right, until next time when we take out our binoculars again and do some more bird watching, remember, you are loved.
