Joy Bombs in the Psalms – Birds Edition! | Psalm 84:1-12, Isaiah 40:31, Psalm 91:1-4

We began this week thinking about the words that Jesus spoke. He gave us some direction. Look at the birds! They know that their heavenly Father is going to provide for them. And so, you and I in studying birds are remembering that our God is going to provide for us and take care of us. And that’s why I chose Psalm 84 today. Join me as we consider that in order for us to believe that God is going to provide for our every need, we need to trust him. This is a psalm about trust. Psalm 84 beginning in verse one.

It’s Friday. And you know what that means? It’s time for joy bombs in the Psalms – Bird edition on the Bible for Busy People. I’m Erica, and I’m so glad to have your company today. We began this week thinking about the words that Jesus spoke. He gave us some direction. Look at the birds! And to paraphrase our Lord, he was saying things like they’re not freaking out.

How lovely is your dwelling place, oh Lord of heaven’s armies. I long. Yes, I faint with longing to enter the courts of the Lord with my whole being body and soul, I will shout joyfully to the living God. Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow builds her nest and raises her young at a place near your altar. Oh Lord of heaven’s armies, my king and my God! What joy for those who can live in your house always singing your praises. What joy for those who strength comes from the Lord…

Remember when we talked about eagles the other day? Let me drop Isaiah 40 31 in here.

But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not be faint.

That’s the kind of strength God wants to give us, and it comes from him. All right, back to Psalm 84. Now I’m going to re-read verse five.

What joy for those whose strength comes from the Lord who have set their minds on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. When they walk through the valley of weeping, it will become a place of refreshing springs. The autumn rains will clothe it with blessings. They will continue to grow stronger and each of them will appear before God in Jerusalem. Oh Lord God of heaven’s armies. Hear my prayer. Listen, oh God of Jacob, O God, look with favor upon the king, our shield. Show favor to the one you have anointed. A single day in your courts is better than a thousand anywhere else. I would rather be a gatekeeper in the house of my God than live the good life in the homes of the wicked. For the Lord, God is our son and our shield. He gives us grace and glory. The Lord will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right. Oh Lord of heaven’s armies, what joy for those who trust in you.

Haven’t you seen all week long that joy and strength go hand in hand? They both come from the Lord. Just like in a worship service. I almost want one psalm to go into the next. So we move from Psalm 84 to Psalm 91.

Those who live in the shelter of the most high will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety. He is my God and I trust him for he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.

All of these words are so beautiful and they describe how safe and secure we are in the shelter, in the shadow, under the wings of our God. Oh, I just want to take a moment and praise the Lord. Father, we just come to you in the name of Jesus and we thank you for your provision and your protection. We thank you that your eye is on the sparrow. You tell us in your Word that you care about birds and you care so much more about us. You tell us that we are so much more valuable than sparrows. God, thank you. Thank you for caring for us. Lord, we return your love. We open our hands today and say, Lord, we trust you, Lord Jesus. We know you’re going to provide for us. Thank you for hiding us under your wings. Thank you for your shelter. Thank you for being our refuge. Oh, we love you so. It’s in Jesus’ name we pray. Amen. All right. Until next week, boy, you and I are really loved.
