Welcome to The Bible For Busy People. I’m Erica Parkerson. This is the place where we meet up to read half a chapter of God’s word together and remember how loved we are. Jesus extends an amazing invitation to us in the Bible. He says, come to me and I will give you rest. This is us RSVPing, “Yes” to that invitation. So, take a deep breath and let’s get started.
Today’s episode is called, “The Key That Opens the Door to Peace”. I am so excited about chapter four in Paul’s letter to the Philippians. Paul is sitting in a jail cell, writing the most encouraging chapter of scripture to the Philippians who are going through a set of trials themselves. And that’s beautiful. This passage we’re about to read today. Is like one of those protein bars it’s packed with so many spiritual nutrients. You don’t want to miss a single one, but before we dive in to chapter four, here, we’re going to cover the first half, let’s pray and give our time to the Lord.
Father, we come to you in the name of Jesus. We ask you to open our eyes and our hearts to what you want us to see and hear in your word in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Without further ado, we’re getting right to it. Here we go. Philippians chapter four, “Dear brothers and sisters, I love you and long to see you.” Paul writes. “For you are my joy and the reward for my work. So please stay true to the Lord, my dear friends. And now I want to plead with those two women, Euodia and Syntyche, please, because you belong to the Lord, settle your disagreement. And I ask you my true teammate to help these women, for they worked hard with me in telling others the good news. And they worked with Clement and the rest of my coworkers, whose names are written in the book of life.”
Here we go, here comes the power packed part, “Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again. Rejoice. Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember the Lord is coming soon. Don’t worry about anything. Instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done. If you do this, you will experience God’s peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” You want peace in your life? Here is the prescription from the apostle Paul. Don’t worry about anything! Pray about everything and thank God for everything he has done for you.
“Then the peace of God, the peace of Jesus himself, will guard your heart and your mind as you live in Christ Jesus.” This is amazing to me. Have you ever seen the guards at Buckingham palace? Maybe you’ve actually been there or maybe you’ve seen video of these guys. They’ve got the bear skin hats, which are actually really heavy. I was reading about this. I mean, you’ve got to have a strong head to be one of these guards at Buckingham palace, but you probably know what they’re famous for. You can try to make them laugh. You can try to distract them. You cannot get them to smile or to focus on you. Their job is to guard the palace and take care of the queen, make sure that she is safe. Nothing can move them from their post. They’re not even allowed to use the restroom when they’re at their post. That’s how serious it is. This is the kind of peace that’s going to guard your heart and your mind as you live the way the apostle Paul described. As I live the way the apostle Paul described. We are to not worry about anything but pray about everything and thank the Lord Jesus for all he has done.
I think we can do that. That is the key that opens the door to that kind of peace in your life, and mine. I want to open that door every day, I want to walk through it every single day. Okay.
