I hope that hope is stirred in your soul, because we’re about to read about Father Abraham and his wife Sarah. We’re gonna recall a promise that God made to them, and in doing so, we’re gonna remember that God keeps his promises. So are you ready?

Okay, remember that song from Sunday School, Father Abraham had many sons, many sons had Father Abraham. You may start singing that today. Hi, I’m Erica, and welcome to the Bible for Busy People. This is where you and I gather to open God’s word. The Lord Jesus is the bread of life, and every time we crack his word open, we are filled with life, and we study God’s word in seven minutes or less around here, and it’s a chance for you and I to refill our hearts with what’s good, right? There’s so much wrong in the world, but this is our chance to press pause on all that stuff and set our compass to what is right. Okay, you are a smack dab in the middle of a series, Cooking in the Bible, Stories That Stir Your Soul. And I hope that your faith is stirred today. I hope that hope is stirred in your soul, because we’re about to read about Father Abraham and his wife Sarah. We’re gonna recall a promise that God made to them, and in doing so, we’re gonna remember that God keeps his promises. So are you ready?
We’re going back to the beginning, we’re going to Genesis, the first book in your Bible, and we’re gonna be in chapter 18, beginning in verse one. “The Lord appeared again to Abraham near the Oak Grove, belonging to Mamre. One day, Abraham was sitting at the entrance to his tent during the hottest part of the day. He looked up and noticed three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he ran to meet them and welcomed them, bowing low to the ground. ‘My lord,’ he said, ‘If it pleases you, stop here for a while. Rest in the shade of this tree while water is brought to wash your feet. And since you’ve honored your servant with this visit, let me prepare some food to refresh you before you continue on your journey.’ ‘All right,’ they said. ‘Do as you have said.’ So Abraham ran back to the tent and said to Sarah, his wife, ‘Hurry! Get three large measures of your best flour, knead it into dough, and bake some bread.’ Then Abraham ran out to the herd and chose a tender calf and gave it to his servant, who quickly prepared it. When the food was ready, Abraham took some yogurt and milk and the roasted meat, and he served it to the men. As they ate, Abraham waited on them in the shade of the trees.” Don’t you love that team effort to make these men who were absolutely there on a purpose, on a mission welcome. It’s a beautiful thing.
“‘Where is Sarah, your wife?’ The visitors asked. ‘She’s inside the tent.’ Abraham replied. Then one of them said, ‘I will return to you about this time next year, and your wife, Sarah, will have a son!’ Sarah was listening to this conversation from the tent. Abraham and Sarah were both very old by this time, and Sarah was long past the age of having children. So she laughed silently to herself and said, ‘How could a worn-out woman like me enjoy such pleasure, especially when my master, my husband, is also so old?’ Then the Lord said to Abraham, ‘Why did Sarah laugh? Why did she say, ‘Can an old woman like me have a baby?’ Is anything too hard for the Lord?'” I just wanna ask you that right now. I wanna pause here for a moment. Is anything too hard for the Lord? No. Nothing is too hard for the Lord. Soak up that truth, right? Nothing is too hard for our Lord. “‘I will return about this time next year, and Sarah will have his son.’ Sarah was afraid, so she denied it, saying, ‘I didn’t laugh.’ But the Lord said, ‘No, you did laugh.'”
What an incredible story and our takeaway verse is, “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” Sarah was long past childbearing age, but the Lord had come with such a powerful message of hope. And she laughed because it was almost like that hope splashed into her heart and the joy came out. I’m sure that she was thinking, this is impossible, but, but maybe. Have you ever felt like that? A little splash of hope in your heart? I believe that this story is for you today. If you need that splash of hope in your heart, absolutely nothing is too hard for the Lord. Maybe you can write that on a post-it note. Maybe you can type it into your phone, take a screenshot and make it your screen saver. Nothing is too hard for our God. All right.
