You Are Valuable! | Matthew 6:19-34

I’m super excited about what God is going to do this week because I believe with all my heart that He gave me this idea in a dream. I kept waking up and thinking about the word “birds.” It was like birds, birds, birds. And I finally said silently because my husband was sleeping, I said, Lord, do you want me to do a series on birds on the podcast? And the answer did not come in an audible fashion, but it was very clear in my spirit. “Yes. Study what my word has to say about birds.

So, are you ready to dive in? Let’s soak up His words. This is Jesus preaching a sermon in Matthew chapter six, beginning in verse 19. Here we go!

Full disclosure, I’m super excited about what God is going to do this week on the Bible for Busy People because I believe with all my heart that he gave me this idea in a dream. I kept waking up and thinking about the word “birds.” It was like birds, birds, birds. And I finally said silently because my husband was sleeping, I said, Lord, do you want me to do a series on birds on the podcast? And the answer did not come in an audible fashion, but it was very clear in my spirit. Yes, study what my word has to say about birds. So, are you ready to dive in? The first passage that came to my mind when I couldn’t sleep that night, obviously there was a reason for that, was Matthew chapter six. I thought about what Jesus said there on the mountain side to all of the people who had gathered to listen to him. Look at the birds. So, picture yourself sitting on that same mountain side. Maybe there were even birds singing as Jesus spoke that day, and let’s just soak up his words. This is Jesus preaching a sermon in Matthew chapter six, beginning in verse 19.

Don’t store up treasures here on earth where moths eat them and rust destroys them and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven where moths and rust cannot destroy and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, they’re the desires of your heart will also be.

All right, we’re going to pitch a tent there for just a moment because I want you to know that God is about to tell you how valuable you are. He treasures you. You are the apple of his eye. So, keep that in mind as we move on here to verse 22.

Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light. But when your eye is unhealthy, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is. No one can serve two masters, for you will hate one and love the other. You will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.

Now, there was a part of me that just wanted to start in verse 23 when Jesus starts talking about birds, but the words you and I just read from the Lord tie into the next part. Jesus is about to tell you and I not to worry. And what is one of the things we worry about the most? If we were on family feud right now, this would be probably in the top three answers. Money, right? So, that’s why I decided to leave this part of the passage in the podcast today. Alright, verse 25 now.

That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life. Whether you have enough food and drink or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them.

Okay? Take a deep breath because this is a deep dive.

And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are?

You are so valuable to God. You are his treasure. Now remember when we pitch to tent on verse 21,

Wherever your treasure is there, the desires of your heart will also be.

I have always read that for me as well. I should as well. You should. Whatever you treasure, there your heart will be. But do you realize that you and I are treasured by God? So, it works both ways. We are close to his heart. He loves us just that much. So, yes, you and I are to treasure the good in this life. We’re to treasure the good and wholesome things, whatever is excellent or praiseworthy. Those things, because they’re the desires of our heart will be. But it works both ways. God treasures you and you are in his heart. Aren’t you far more valuable to God than birds? Picking it up in verse 27,

Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?

What a question, right?

And why worry about your clothing?

Remember, Jesus is on a mountainside right now. There must be tons of beautiful flowers.

Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for wild flowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you.

I mean, he will certainly care for you. This is Jesus telling us personally how much God cares for us. If he puts so much detail into the wildflowers that you and I walk on as we walk through a field, how much more does he care for you, and all of the details in your life? Jesus goes on to say,

Why do you have so little faith? So don’t worry about these things saying what will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear? These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers. But your heavenly Father already knows all your needs.

Stop there. He already knows all of your needs. From the smallest need in your pantry. Maybe you need more cereal right now, or maybe you need healing for somebody you love. Whatever you need, Jesus is telling us right here that our heavenly Father knows all of our needs. Every single one. You are valuable to him. Jesus goes on in verse 33,

Seek the kingdom of God above all else and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

So not only does he know our every need from small to great, he will give us, he give you, he will give me, everything we need.

So don’t worry about tomorrow. For tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.

Wow. You’ve got a father who is well aware of your needs and you are his treasure. I take my wedding rings off at work sometimes and I always put them in a special place and I keep my eye on them throughout the day. And if I care about my rings and keep track of them, how much more does God care about you and me and keep track of us? You are his treasure and he’s got your back Until next time. You are really loved.
